Defenders of the Galaxy 2 sci-fi action scene and artwork overview by Orbix Studio

Our task was to design the Defenders of the Galaxy 2 universe in a way that makes the mech characters feel powerful and dynamic. The audience needed a clear way to instantly understand the sci-fi action and energy of the game. At the same time, the art style had to support mobile screens, large digital displays, and physical gallery exhibitions.

PROBLEM

Sci-fi game art can look generic and messy

Sci-fi games need to look exciting, but a lot of space art ends up looking exactly the same. The initial art for Defenders of the Galaxy 2 was blending in with basic space themes. It had so many tiny mechanical parts that it looked cluttered, and people couldn’t tell what was important.

  • Blended-In Characters: The giant robots (mechs) looked just like every other space game out there.
  • Visual Clutter: There were too many details, making it hard to see the main focus.
  • Frozen Action: The characters looked stuck and frozen instead of moving fast on a static poster.
  • Boring Colors: The original colors were dull, making the characters disappear into the dark background.

SOLUTION

High-energy action scenes with glowing neon colors

We redesigned the universe to make everything look explosive and full of motion. We used high-contrast colors like neon purple, deep blue, and bright orange accents to catch your eye instantly and show off the action.

  • Explosive Poses: We drew the warriors in heavy, dynamic action shots so you feel the energy of the space battles.
  • Glowing Light Effects: Added bright lightning bolts and energy lines to show power.
  • Clean Line Art: We kept the mechanical drawings crisp so they stay clear even with lots of details.
  • Background Contrast: Made the background look soft and atmospheric so the heroes stand out.

PROCESS

A User-centered design process

Following the exact structure, we adjusted our design methodology to focus completely on visual clarity, scale, and high-energy impact across the viewer's journey.
01
Concept & Ideation
We change the layout to guide your eyes directly from the bright lighting effects straight to the main characters, so the action makes sense instantly.
  • Brainstorming sci-fi themes
  • Guiding the viewer's eye
  • Sketching rough action poses
  • Fixing confusing layouts
02
Color & Lighting
We redesigned the color palette using bright neon purples, deep space blues, and hot orange highlights to create an electric vibe.
  • Picking neon purple and blue tones
  • Adding vibrant orange accents
  • Creating glowing energy sources
  • Building atmospheric depth
03
Composition & Layout
We make the mech warriors much bigger and use cool structures like giant domes and deep space canyons to frame them perfectly.
  • Sizing up the mech warriors
  • Designing giant dome structures
  • Framing with deep space canyons
  • Setting a clear visual order
04
Style & Execution
We refine the drawings so the intricate mechanical line art looks super sharp, keeping the backgrounds soft so nothing gets confusing.
  • Inking crisp mechanical lines
  • Softening background environments
  • Balancing armor details
  • Final digital painting polish

RESEARCH

Finding out where people look first

We studied how viewers look at busy action art. When there are too many robot parts and laser beams on a page, the brain gets tired and looks away.

To fix this, we used natural shapes - like the lightning bolts - to act as arrows. These lines point directly at the hero's face, helping the audience understand the sci-fi adventure instantly without getting lost in the details.

Concept Art & Character Design: Building cool robot warriors

We designed the unique identities for the galactic heroes to make them stand out from other games. We gave each character special armor, weapons, and personality traits.

  • Character Cards: We created custom sheets for heroes like "PROFESSOR DRONE" and "THUNDERBORN SPACE" with clear text and action poses.
  • Sketch to Finish:We’ve shown our exact drawing process, splitting the detailed black-and-white line art sketch from the fully rendered, glowing digital painting.

Environment Illustration: Creating massive alien worlds

We drew the cosmic backgrounds, space structures, and futuristic tech that the characters interact with. This gives the characters a real, massive space to fight in.

  • Epic Landscapes: We illustrated a hero with massive purple mechanical wings flying toward a brilliant sun over rocky alien mountains.
  • Big Screen Scale: The artwork looks incredibly sharp even when blown up to a massive size, like the giant glowing wall display that reads "BATTLE MODE - ACTIVATED!".

RESULTS & OUTCOMES

An award-winning universe that works anywhere

Our changes took the game's visuals to a whole new level and got noticed by the global design community.

  • Behance Feature: The project was officially chosen as a top design and stamped with the "FEATURED IN Best of Behance" badge.
  • Real-World Posters: The art translates perfectly to physical gallery prints, as shown on the modern subway station walls.
  • Perfect App Matching: The illustrations scale down perfectly to fit phone layouts and widescreen laptop displays cleanly.
  • Instant Action: Viewers can feel the game's excitement and high stakes immediately without needing to read a single line of text.
